First Lady Michelle Obama Receives 2012 Official White House Christmas Tree

Mrs. Obama will welcome military families to the White House when she unveils her holiday decor theme...

First Lady Michelle Obama gave a thumbs up on Friday morning to the official White House Christmas Tree, delivered during a festive but chilly morning ceremony by horse-drawn wagon. Joined by daughters Malia, Sasha and First Dog Bo, Mrs. Obama received the 19-foot Fraser Fir in front of the North Portico as a Marine Corps string quartet played "O Christmas Tree." The First Lady led Bo on a leash as she and the girls circled the North Carolina-grown tree and examined it closely, accompanied by father-son farmers Randy and Beau Estes, the 2012 National Christmas Tree Association Grand Champions. (Above: Mrs. Obama gives the thumbs up)

"It is gorgeous," Mrs. Obama told the farmers. "It's perfect." As she raised her hand to give the thumbs up, Mrs. Obama said "It's a go. We can have Christmas now."

The First Lady wore a festive red printed skirt, black turtleneck, wide belt and knee-high boots, and at one point bent over and gave a branch a sniff. Malia and Sasha poked at the tip of the huge tree. The centerpiece of this year's holiday decor, the tree will be displayed in the Blue Room, and decorated with ornaments made by children living on U.S. Military Bases all over the world, the White House said. It is "in tribute to the courageous service of our armed forces." The First Lady will unveil the tree and her 2012 holiday theme next Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The Estes harvested the tree earlier this month on their Peak Farms in Jefferson, Ashe County, North Carolina after members of the White House grounds staff selected it in October. The duo won their Grand Champion title in August for a different tree.

White House staff and volunteers invited from across the US will deck the halls of the White House over the weekend, transforming 1600 Pennsylvania into a glittering and festive wonderland. Mrs. Obama has invited military families, including Gold Star and Blue Star parents, spouses and children to the White House next week for the first viewing of the 2012 holiday decorations on Wednesday.

She will deliver remarks in the East Room, and then ask the military children to join her in the State Dining Room as White House Executive Chef Cris Comerford and Executive Pastry Chef Bill Yosses, and White House Chief Floral Designer Laura Dowling demonstrate holiday crafts and treats.

Members of the National Christmas Tree Association have presented the Official White House Christmas Tree for display in the Blue Room each year since 1966.

President Obama on Friday morning was working off his Thanksgiving feast, playing golf at Joint Base Andrews with three White House aides. He departed the White House just as Mrs. Obama was receiving the tree. (Above: Mrs. Obama and the girls with the Estes)

Floral Flash [Event News] - The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates 100 years

2012 Centennial:

A Once In A Lifetime Celebration

In 1912, an incredible gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees was bestowed on Washington, DC by Tokyo, Japan. Rooted strongly and surviving outside elements, the trees have withstood the test of time – and nearly a century later, the National Cherry Blossom Festival is preparing for an unprecedented and once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

The epic 5-week spectacular, from March 20 – April 27, 2012, will unify and electrify the city, the nation, and the world. Washington, DC and the region will be abuzz with excitement. Creativity and innovation will permeate signature Festival events elevating them to new heights, and ground-breaking Centennial exhibitions and programming will amaze and delight. Timeless traditions. Rich culture. Renowned artists. World-class performers. The community at its best!

In honor of one of our nation’s most beloved treasures, and a living reminder of international friendship and the beauty of nature, we look forward to celebrating with you the 100th anniversary of the gift of trees – and setting the stage for the next 100 years.  There will be no doubt that spring has sprung. We will paint the town pink and want you to join us.

The grand commemoration would not be possible without the support of Daiichi Sankyo Co, Ltd, co-chair of the Centennial Host Committee. Daiichi Sankyo, a global leader in pharmaceutical innovation since 1899, has a unique connection to the cherry blossoms. Nearly a century ago, a world-famous chemist and Sankyo’s first president, Dr. Jokichi Takamine, played a pivotal role in arranging the gift of trees from the city of Tokyo to Washington, DC.

Rick Rivers - Business Motivation - Learn how to survive in this economy and stay on top
riversRick and Susie Rivers have owned A Floral Boutique Florist in Ormond Beach, Fl for over 28 years. After 10 years as a police officer in Daytona Beach, Fl. Rick joined the family business and began to take it to the next level in sales. Rick has experienced all the ups and downs in the floral industry just like every other florist. In the 1990's Rick began to teach for Redbook and FTD the art of Holiday Planning Gone Mad to local and state associations and at the FTD Convention in Nashville, Tenn. Rick began to experiment with different marketing concepts and soon joined a national marketing group. This group meets twice a year and has thousands of members who exchange ideas so you know what's working now. In this group Rick learned the true meaning of marketing and where that component is headed for florists. So, now Rick can bring some of the greatest marketing ideas and apply them to the florist industry. This industry has been in decline for the last 10 years and florists will have some "serious challenges ahead if they don't change how they market and how they implement what they do."
In the summer of 2009 Rick's first book, Blooming at the Top, 12 Strategies to Double Your Sales was released. The book details strategies that today's florist need to do to stay afloat through these tough times. Rick has taken all the "big box" strategies and re-worked them for the local florists and one of the direct mail campaigns hit 29.6%.

Rick's second book has been released. "No Fishing in My Pond, A Blueprint to Protect Your Sales". This book teaches you how to put a fence around your customer base and keep them coming back for more sales, thus allowing you to make the extra money that the local business owners need. Rick also has full line of Cd workshops on industry topics. Rick has spoken at many conventions in the last 3 years, over 500 stores and 1500 people have attended his seminars along with his 3 boot camps.

In January of 2009 Rick kicked off his first "Florist Boot camp", located in Orlando, Fl. Rick partnered with the Florida State Florists Association and provided the 2 day event in place of their winter gathering. Forty three florist and wholesalers showed up and learned many new ways to do business for the years to come. A list of the testimonials and the speaking engagements can be viewed at www.floristbootcamp.com.
